Introducing the Sugar Cane 1953 Type II black denim jacket in a contemporary hardwash version, perfect for those who prefer an instantly worn-in look without the wait. Inspired by the iconic Levi's Type II from the 1950s, this jacket represents a pivotal moment when denim transitioned from workwear to casual wear in the U.S. Sugar Cane’s meticulous reproduction process—spanning spinning, weaving, dyeing, and stitching—ensures an authentic homage to this timeless classic.

The stonewash edition offers a clean, natural appearance, achieved through collaboration with a renowned wash house. Sugar Cane’s commitment to preserving the vintage denim charm is evident, even in this accelerated aging process. Crafted with the same attention to detail, the jacket features a blend of American and Zimbabwean cotton yarns, sulfur-dyed black in both warp and weft, mimicking the irregular yarn thickness of the original for an authentic, uneven fade. The weaving process is slow and labor-intensive, producing only a limited amount of fabric per day on vintage Toyoda shuttle looms. The weft is then forcefully driven in, causing the yarns to overlap, resulting in an uneven surface and a tight weave. Whether paired with raw denim jeans or a solid t-shirt, this stonewash version effortlessly captures the essence of a naturally aged denim jacket—something very difficult to achieve naturally due to the slow fading of double black fabrics.

Fit Notes: Despite being a Japanese jacket, we find the sizing of this Type II to be more Western than Japanese. If you usually wear a size M in American jackets, you'll find a suitable fit with this jacket in size 40 (M). However, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit. It is unsanforized but one washed, so there will be no shrinkage.
